Top 10 Comedy Series in the Philippines

Philippine television definitely would not be complete without a serving of good old Pinoy Sitcom. See who made the list of Philippine TV’s Funniest.

1.      Abangan Ang Susunod na Kabanata – It stated the condition of Philippine society and politics in a nutshell with more than enough humor to accompany it.  This sitcom, which aired from 1991-1997, revolved around three families who did not share anything in common and always opposed one another, turning the show into one big hilarious riot.

2.      Banana Split –  from 2008 until today, this comedy gag show was broadcast in ABS-CBN every Saturday evening featuring Angelica Panganiban, Jason Gainza, and John Prats, with Pooh, Zanjoe Marudo and Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash of 2010 2nd Big Placer Ryan Bang.

3.      Bubble Gang – ang pinakamahabang Philippine comedy sketch gag show airing on GMA Network since October 20, 1995 pa. The show shot up to popularity for their parodies of television commercials, politicians and current events. The show also airs internationally via GMA Pinoy TV, while re-runs are aired via Fox Filipino.

4.      Home Along Da Riles isang Philippine situational comedy series that aired on the Philippine network ABS-CBN from 1992 to 2003. The title started out as a play on the feature film Home Alone and with the main character’s first name taken as a direct copy from the film’s main protagonist.

5.      Iskul Bukol – established the trio of Tito, Vic and Joey as a formidable force in Philippine entertainment.  This series ran from 1977 until 1990, although a revival was made in 2011.

6.      John en Marsha – From 1973 until 1990, the Puruntong Family led by John and his wife Marsha represented the quintessential Filipino family of the 1980’s. Throw in a nagger mother-in-law and the result was a riot that never fail to culminate in the show’s most famous line “Kaya ikaw John, magsumikap ka!”

7.      Ober Da Bakod (in Tagalog, ober da is a phonetic spelling of “over the” and bakod means “fence”, hence the title means “over the fence”) was a Philippine sitcom produced by Viva Television and co-produced and broadcast by GMA Network from 1992–1997.

8.      Okay Ka Fairy Ko – This fantasy sitcom which revolved around the story of a mortal who married a fairy was first shown in 1987 and ended in 1997. Starring Vic Sotto, the program was shown weekly and has survived the resignation of two leading ladies. It is also considered to be the most successful TV-to-movie franchise in the country.

9.      Palibhasa Lalake – This 90’s sitcom boasted of a good-looking cast and weekly plots. The script geared toward silly to ridiculous but what really made the show heart-stopping hilarious was that the actors never stuck to the script and guests had no idea what to expect.  Palibhasa Lalake was aired from 1987 to 1998.

10.  Tropang Trumpo – The show was able to innovate upon the meaning of comedy in Philippine television through its unique way of showcasing funny and amusing acts. Thanks to the show, “chicken” now has a whole new meaning.  Tropang Trumpo aired from 1994 to 1999. Comedy in the Philippines require less use of the brain cells, yet it provides warmth and mirth, and if only for the time being, as an escape from life’s problems.

Local comedies are also innovative and that can be seen through the diversity of the TOP 10 listed here.  One is totally diverse from another.  These series have shaped and are still continuing to shape Philippine television.  In a few years, the comedies that still survive now will also be obsolete but it has done its part in helping to bring fun and laughter in Filipino households.
